Michelia figo, also known as Port Wine Magnolia has a sweet and fruity scented flower. Popular as a hedging plant with its dense growth habit and evergreen, glossy leaves. Michelia figo flowers during spring and summer with creamy white flowers that begin as a brown, wine coloured bud, hence the name Port Wine Magnolia. The scent is strongest during the evening, so plant them close to your favourite sitting spot in your garden.
This very clever plant can produces flowers on old wood, meaning that even a tightly clipped hedge can produce a stunning floral display. Grows well in frost free areas of Australia, in full sun and part shade. Prune after flowering to encourage fresh new growth and to keep it in shape. If left to grow, it can reach up to 3m tall and almost the same wide.
